Matt,

The "D" load class will give you a little stiffer side wall, and should give you better cross wind handling. That will be the biggest difference in my opinion with your possible tire change. I think that the 205's likely will provide better cross wind performance, than the 185. There is lower roll resistance with 185's, a lot will depend on what you are looking for, your driving habits, and overall road conditions.

I personally use a 185 "d" summer tire, as I NEVER drive my Vanagon in the Michigan winters any more. I like the summer tire, as it helps provide a quite ride. Most of my driving is highway, and seldom off road (just dirt roads to Michigan camp sites). I'm running the Yokohama Y356, from Tire Rack, and have been very happy so far.

Jack

Volks-

Time has come (when repairs are done on Blackbeard) to replace the tires.

I've currently got 205-70-R14 Toyo 800 Ultras on there (93T Premium Touring). Considering going back to stock 185s, but given that I've never had anything BUT the 205s, what can I expect as far as difference in performance?

Bigger question- Do I even NEED 205s in a warmer climate like Vegas, especially given that Blackbeard stays on pavement?

I'm looking at a bunch of different brands, understanding of course that I need a minimum load class of "C" and reinforced walls . . . Maybe some Hankooks?

Actually having a hard time finding 205s with a high enough load rating, surprisinglly. . .
