Armrests removed, instead of flipped up?  Blasphemy!
A driver has proper control of his vehicle with no hindrance to arm movement
for evasive maneuvers, provided that he's seated the proper distance from
the steering wheel.  Too close and, armrests or not,  no-one has sufficient
arm movement for proper control during evasive maneuvers.  Practice and
you'll see what I mean.
  Take a defensive driving class, I've taken a few (luckily paid for by my
previous employer), and found it very helpful.    It's best taken in the
vehicle that you'll be driving in, not one of the school's loaners.
  I drive most of the day in my job.  I put about 200 miles a day/ 5 days a
week in my job as a service technician.  This doesn't count all of my
personal miles in a few other vehicles, my Westy being one of them.
