I'm pretty sure the switch is to tell the ECU that there's an added load (from the power steering pump), so it needs to increase the idle speed. Mine seems to be functioning just fine without that switch. I don't understand why the switch uses a hot feed, rather than ground. I also don't know why it fries like that--one of life's little mysteries, I guess
