just rebuild those wires. it's a 20 + year old VW after all.......... it's semi-normal for this to occur. I've seen this before on vanagons.............I'd just re-do it very carefully, keep and eye on it for a while, always carry a fire extinguisher - you know, like 'normal' for any 20 + year old Volkswagen. Actually, I regard this as 'good' that you've discovered something that needs attention, and deal with it now, rather than later when it either causes a no-start or a fire.

if 'switch' you are referring to is on the power steering pump...........that's just to tell the ECU if the PS pressure gets a little high, to up the idle a tiny bit, like if you were parallel parking say. not all PS vanagons have that switch , it's not an critical item or anything.
