next time you're working on something designed dumbly in a vanagon .... say adjusting the clutch master slave push rod length..... the single hardest adjustment in the whole van............ and you're cursing.........just remember, 'it's not bad design, it's just an idiosyncrasy.'

I'll tell you why the seat arm rests interfere with the front doors, and why they didn't worry about it. - that's because the two front swiveling seats are designed for facing each other with the small table between them....... with two kids to sitting there facing each other to eat din-din. It's shown in the camper owner's manual.

In that case............for sure, that the seats hit the door parts doesn't matter....... and this is a good example of very ridged german mind set........it is designed for One Thing......... only 'Correct Use' ( in their minds ) and nothing else.

It's apparent throughout a lot of german design. And that is Idiosyncratic all right..........."Zay vill use it zee vay vee disigned it to be used, and no other vay !!"

In good design there's no way to use it wrong, or assembly it wrong, or use it in a way where it can hurt itself. I'll stop here...........there was a german engineered aircraft retractable nose wheel design......in Canada over a 15 year period there were some 80 cases of a regional airliner, forget the make..........where they had to land with the nose wheel turned 90 degrees to the correct way for landing.

In the final analysis of why this kept occurring ........Canada's national aircraft safety board came up with - 'a maintenance error that was design influenced.' In other words.... the people that designed it..........german engineers as I remember..............designed it so it could be put together incorrectly, and it was not easy to tell either, and that's how they had all those potentially very serious landing incidents.

you know Murphy's Law right ? Ever see a 'traveling mouse seat belt design' break off a visor ? or choke a technician reaching in the car's window to turn the key off or on during repair and testing ? or.......I'll stop here I swear..............people killed or even beheaded by seat belts going off violently in minor fender bender accidents ? That' all falls under 'dumb design.' I say. have fun !
