I doubt that there is, in the long term, much 'they've screwed themselves permanently...... given the extreme #'s of people in Inida and China who want thier first ever car............... just to name one factor and two groups.......among many .......the demand for petroleum is not likely to diminish for a long time yet.

I read a very interesting aritcle about this gas versus diesel price thing. The article I read in Car & Driver magazine stated that out of a barrel of crude..........depending on which refining process is used..... the refineres here in north america use one 'main process' .......in Europe they use 'the other main process that's common' .......... and that they get more gasoline out of a barrel of crude than diesel.........the process dictates that.

In Europe they end up making more gasoline than they actually need, to get the amount of diesel fuel they need..........and they actually export gasoline. Given the amount of diesel fuel used in trasportation........ships, trucks, and a few trains....... demand for diesel is very high. It's not likely to become less expensive than gasoline again.......from what I read anyway. The days of diesel being cheaper than gas may be over. I just read that California is going to start getting after the trucking industry and all the diesel city buses used in California to clean up their act .........diesel exhaust is bad news. New diesel trucks and engines have modern emissions standards to meet of course..........I think the automobile side of that is not that huge a portion of the whole problem.........overall, considering all diesels used in transportation..........cars are not that big a part of the emissions issue........but there's a lot to be done yet on trucks and buses from what I read.

As for 'being hooked' .........right now it feels to me that everyone remembers very well what 4-plus dollars a gallon gas feels like ( or near 5 dollars a gallon diesel ) ...... and now that gas is under 2 bucks per, .........people are not thinking.........oh cheap gas is back, let's get an SUV .........hardly........ they're going ....'man, that was painful'........let's drive less, let's drive something fairly effecient.

Considering the huge effort to get that juice out of the ground from thosuands of miles away, get it to close to us, then refiine it into usable road fuels...... and have it handly right down the street for many people .............that's a miracle..........and the price they manage to keep it down to, wow, we're really lucky we are able to get that go-juice at all, especially at any reasonable price.

Did the price go down in Europe too, btw........anyone know ? My guess is it did, though nothing like what we've expereinced here. scott ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike" <mbucchino@CHARTER.NET> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2008 7:40 AM Subject: Re: Got GAS?
