I forget how much power the eco-diesel makes, but enough diesel vanagon owners have installed the engine that it must be worth the trouble. It isn't as much as the standard TD with the aneroid. The pump with the aneroid, and especially the one designed specifically for use in the euro-version vanagon TD factory offerings (where you don't even have to cut the rear hatch to miss the extra mass), would make much better use of the setup as you say.
