No offence here, but my 9 to 5 job is working at the Quesnel School
District in the computer services department. Part of my job is
administgrating the various mailing lists for the entire District, some of
which are province wide. Nothing peeves me more than NOT having the
context of what is said so I don't have to go back through a dozen emails
to see what the original thought was. You can't assume that someone
knows 100% of what is going on at all time. If you trim the fluff
and stuff people who just joined or have searched the archives will only
get half the answer they are looking for. Sure, trim off the
advertising and bull $#!t that is tacked on to the bottom of the messages
away - why we started to poison our archives with the silly footer is
beyond me - but it really is pointless to reply to anything if you remove
all the stuff that came before it or else you will get meaningless
reponces like "I don't argree with that" and that's it... well
if you see that responce without anything else around it, it is a pretty
pointless waste of everyone's time. If you have "I don't agree
with that" and the previous email message before that saying
"the world is flat" - everyone is on the same page and can add
their two cents to the responce with full confidence they have the whole
story, cause maybe the world is flat in Who Land, but someone trimmed that
and you you made yourself look like a baboon. Hard drive space and
CPU power is cheap cheap cheap. Need a server, we have lots we have
retired, I have anything that is better than our current list server I
will donate the hardware to the list. So yeah, trim your reply to
remove the fluff, but don't trim them and remove the stuff.
I
also vote to get ride of the footer at the bottom of the messages and to
send a monthly announcement, that isn't archived, to all members that
includes a full list of all the listseve commands - far far far more
useful.
