I am truly sorry so see Jim's letter of resignation. What a thankless
job he had. Being on a moderator on this list should not require so
much babysitting of the members who cannot follow the simple rules that
the members agreed upon long ago. Every one has thier limits and we
have obviously pushed Jim beyond those limits. Maybe the next moderator
will not be so tolerant of off topic discussions and simply banish
repeat offenders from the list. The issue as I see it that Jim was
trying to stress to us all was not simply that may topics were not
relevant or of no interest to the majority of the list or could be
discussed via p-mail. The underlying problem is with the bandwidth and
memory involved when all of this off-topic material needs to be shelved
away in the vnagon.com archives. It then becomes an issue for everyone
that uses the archives by slowing down searches with more info to
search not to mention the fact that memory costs money and the list
relies on contributions from invividual members to remain viable. i see
this list as sort of a virtual classroom with most on the list being
anxious to learn from others shared experiences. Ocassionally there are
those in the class that will "act up" and disrupt the reason that the
rest of us are here. These individuals are then called out by the
principal (moderator) and asked to refain from these practices. The new
moderator may not coddle and beg those that do not follow the rules to
change their ways. There is the possibility that no one would want the
moderator position then what happens to this list. Let's police
ourselves and follow the rules and make the next moderators job a bit
easier. Thanks for all of your service for the list Jim.
