Guys, I wouldn't waste any time removing the metal PS lines from the donor. A much better aftermarket alternative is around $200. Most vendors carry it now, but Frank Condelli was the first to offer it if my memory serves me. Worth every penny IMHO. dylan ________________________________ From: Scott Daniel - Turbovans <scottdaniel@TURBOVANS.COM> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Sent: Thursday, December 18, 2008 2:49:49 PM Subject: Re: Adding Power Steering to an '87? Hi Dave, great list there. minor clarifications : Crank pulleys on all waterboxer engines ( all US models anyway ) are the same so no need for a different crank pulley. I have done this conversion ..........you might mention that to get the PS pipes over the gas tank, you need to remove the gas tank, always a fun job. If converting an 83 or earlier vanagon, you also need to cut out two notches on the inner edge of the frame just below the filler neck area, so the PS pipes can fit alongside the fuel tank. It's a fun job, ha ha. The front part isn't so involved, but when you combine that effort with doing the pipes above the gas tank........ it gets to be a pretty big job by the end of the whole process.- there main areas to work on - rack and knuckles and forward shaft, pipes and hoses, and the engine area - pump and reservoir. If someone quote 10 hours I wouldn't think they were trying to rip anyone off. ( another minor note for 83's ..........the threaded holes are not in the right cylinder head for the PS pump bracket.......but the bosses are, and the holes can be drilled out and threaded with the engine in the car. ) I have............for sale..........a good PS steering rack from an 87 Westy, the matching 'forward shaft' to go with it. And I have PS pumps and reservoirs.... oh btw..........another minor part...........PS reservoir bracket..........some are welded to the body, a few are bolted. I might have one of those. and I have some of the long metal pipes too. Hi Loren Yes, in 1987 you could buy a Vanagon with manual steering. Here are most of the parts that are different... (I'm using ETKA as a guide) Steering wheel. Power is smaller Input shaft to the rack from Steering wheel. Power uses a different input shaft to the rack (shorter) and it is fitted with a universal joint rather than a rubber disk. Steering rack. The power rack is not the same (duh). Tie rods. I believe the tie rods are the same (unconfirmed). Suspension knuckles. The front suspension knuckles are different between power and non. Additional items. Power Steering pump, reservoir, hoses, engine bracket, belt, crank pulley (?), switch for idle control and wiring. Iım sure there are parts that I havenıt accounted for. Good luck this is a big job.
