Since I've been finding wiring problems on my recently purchased '86 GL, your problem prompted me to take a look at mine. I saw that there was only one wire going to my PS pump. The other wire had broken off right at the harness.

As I cut open the harness and peeled it back I saw that the two wires for the pump were fusing together. The rest of the wires were OK. I had to peel the harness back about 8-10" before I could find solid wire. At that point I spliced in new wire and ran them to the pump. Then I closed the harness back up.

Glad I saw your post. I might not have caught the problem.
