Well, given the choice between stranded at the side of the road, and limping to the safety of a roadside rest stop, I'd certainly give it a try. BTW, AAA will bring you parts for minor repairs if you can describe exactly what it is you need to repair the problem.

My aircooled 73 camper popped its drain plug on the interstate travelling through Buffalo one afternoon during a summer rush hour in 2004. Luckily, the guy I was travelling with had a whole case of 20W50 with him, but we still needed a drain plug.

It turned out that a seat-belt anchor bolt is the right thread, though it does reduce the ground clearance by about an inch or so.
