I think the easiest solution is to simply not leave the side of the van while the gas is filling. You shouldn't anyway, especially since the auto cut off on pump handles can fail, then you are spewing expensive gasoline all over the van and the ground. I saw this happen in the '70's to guy filling up a '77 Corvette-which had the fuel filler in the "trunk" area-the gas started shooting up in the air like a fountain. The Vanagon tank is so small it doesn't take that long to fill up anyway.
