That was me with the connector replacement. It involved replacing all the traces that go to the connector with plain old wire. You sure could replace the whole blue PCB thing with wires. Wouldn't be pretty. Do people have trouble with areas other than the connector? Here's the link to my page with the instrument cluster overhaul info:
