No can't say I have ever done that, when I'm pumping gas I'm pumping gas besides on my Vanagon the ignition key is with the gas cap key and I'd notice if I hadn't put the nozzle back and the cap on.

They work good for me as a way of letting me know something is there with a real quick glance, of course nothing is quite as good as a physical glance.
