well................ two schools of thought on that........... if it's sitting on the pump.......and you drive off and remember it...............fair chance you can go back and get it. If you leave it on the vehicle somewhere, and drive off, it might fall off just anywhere........just anywhere out on the road that's 'unfindable.' I put mine on the pump or inside the sliding door on the floor even. The stock gas cap is pretty nice I think, especially if the key lock is working in it .........the key won't come out unless the cap is in the locked position - pretty clever.
