My aftermarket gas cap has a really peculiar key for it and I've
already lost the first key and am on the spare from here on out. I'm
not sure even a locksmith could find a spare for it. Solution? I
took some small climber's cord(maybe 2mm and tied a long prussick
loop with the fancy double fisherman's knot at the ends (X's and
11's anybody??)
I girth hitched it to the gold anodized part of the passenger side
door lock fastened to the body(90 GL non power lock) and when not in
use, it dangles harmlessly behind the passenger seat and in front of
the sliding door. The cord is long enough so it can allow the key to
unlock and lock the gas cap and I rest the cap by the seat adjuster
when filling the tank. I've driven off a time or two without
re-fastening the cap to the filler, but I won't lose that cap or key
under the current set up. The cord is thin enough that it doesn't
interfere with the closing or locking of the door. The cord is a mix
of orange and blue, the same stuff I lashed my floatation air bags in
my whitewater solo canoe. Good use for the leftover cord. I can
imagine a black cord system similar in nature for a Syncro where you
girth hitched the key to one of the air vent louvers by the cap and
them when done, shove it back down the air duct. I'd be shocked if a
thief ever found that key.
