using the neutral safety switch in the consol........which only allows the starter to operate in Park or Neutral..... you could use that switch and a relay system so if the key is off, and it's not in Park or Neutral you get a really obnoxious buzzer. But you really want it just for Park....... so possibly the neutral portion of the circuit could be taken out of the picture........ so the Obnoxious Buzzer will sound if 'key is off, and the Shift Lever in any position besides Park..' That would work., If I had time I'd make this circuit and offer it for sale.

To be sure.......you just need to make sure you put that sucker in Park every time. It's 3 things really..........key off, lights off, and it's in Park. I have walked back to my vanagon many times to make sure it was in Park.

other thoughts - a minor gas saving trick is to shut it off in Drive....... that way you get it shut off as soon as possible.........and the drag of the trans helps to get the engine stopped too, THEN you put it in park. 'the problem' however is.........that people have been putting it in Park first, with the engine revving a bit, then shutting it in off. It's very difficult for many people to learn a new way of doing it. Personally, I shut off first, then put it in Park.......and you just have to remember to always secure the vehicle, in whatever manner, from rolling, every single time, without exception.

But a warning system wouldn't be all that hard to make. Scott www.turbovans.com

Couldn't this piece be used to wire up an alarm to make a noise of some kind when you park a vanagon, like an initial pleasant beep if you did the right thing and put it into Park, and warning alarm if you don't (with an override switch)... I can't count how many times I've had to thrown it into park after jumping out of the vanagon only to notice it starting to roll. One time in particular was really scary, on an incline...

They can do this, http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_764_810/battery_saver_alarm.html so it should be able to have this added feature.

I don't understand electronics enough to pull it off myself... I'm still puzzled over the Shunt for my solar panel and how it would work with a second battery.
