I have a SA fuel tank that is bigger than original stock. I'm impatient, accident prone, scattered. Just waiting for a red a light, or a fuel pump, makes me feel like I'm suffocating. Yeah, better to wait it out... but I need some insurance or assurance, before I drive away... and I guess, being a little dense, I never really thought about how this really is the tipping point for using only a gas cap that requires the ignition key.

I've had my gas cap fall off on two different occasions, so the second time it happened I opted for the generic non-ignition key type from VW. That also explains why in the past I never had an issue with this. I thought it was senility, but now I finally realize its simply because I changed over on the type of gas cap...

But even so, its still always possible to have the ignition key in the ignition and to leave the gas cap on the ground with the fill house in the fuel tube... so, 5 dollars for a concave mirror versus 175 dollars or whatever was/is... is okay with me.

You shouldn't anyway, especially since the auto cut off on pump handles can fail, then you are spewing expensive gasoline all over the van and the ground. I saw this happen in the '70's to guy filling up a '77 Corvette-which had the fuel filler in the "trunk" area-the gas started shooting up in the air like a fountain. The Vanagon tank is so small it doesn't take that long to fill up anyway. Have you ever driven away from a fuel stop with the fill line stuck in your fill tube? You hear this noise.. and then you find out that was an expensive pit stop... Happened to me twice so far... been paranoid ever since...
