You are talking about the very efficient German military here... I think the driver drives and that's it.  Every Iltis and T3 I have seen from the army has a weapon holder within reach of the passenger but not the driver.  Probably the same reason why you can talk on the cell phone and drive at the same time - someone's gonna get hurt!  :-)
