Hey, I've owned beaters and will again, most likely. I'm just saying that I have read on this very list of people searching for specifically this type of Vanagon and here is one that someone might otherwise find very desirable in deplorable condition.
If you need more tales of persons making interesting automotive finds but being deterred/deflected by owners determined to let the vehicles rot into the ground, then take a look at carsinbarns.com. My own sister did that with a '68 Mustang she bought new. After it had rusted so badly that people ceased asking to buy it she sent it to the crusher.
You don't need an excuse to stay out of Richmond if you have a reason.

really hate to see a vehicle trashed. There's a Wolfsburg Edition hardtop
living nearby and I spotted it in the lot of a tire place today. Stopped for a
close look and saw that it got new Tiger Paws installed on its scuffed and
corroded alloys. It's got a vanity plate that practically brags VW
awareness but the right side cladding is missing and nearly every panel is
dented. Worst of all, the groovy diagonal striped blue interior is loaded with
gas weed whackers, dirty tools and a big Jobox that can't be doing the
interior any good. What a conflict! Maybe it's the guy's only ride and
it does exactly what he wants of it, but some folks would kill to have that van
in better shape. I had my camera but declined to take a pic, not wanting to
document the decline.
