I was always under the impression that the country homes campers were made from converted Tin Top busses, meaning the roof is still round. Therefore you have the same problems associated with converting a tintop to a Westfalia, except you already have a hole and some kind of bed that might not fit with the Westfalia top. The "RIGHT" way to do it is generally to cut the whole roof off and weld the whole top off a westfalia on due to the completely different bracing and structure of the Westfalia roof. You could of course do this. The other solution is to use the "big hole method" of cutting a hole in the vanagon roof, adding a poptop, and being happy, though you end up with a problem when using the stock westfalia top bed, as the "front" piece won't store up there and you'll have to carry seperately (at least that's the case in my conversion). http://members.shaw.ca/stuartblack/vwprojec.htm a creative solution from over seas: http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=24897 They cut and bend the existing roof to be compatible with the westfalia bed and add their own cross brace.... -Craig '85GL turned WESTY On Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 4:10 PM, Mike Miller <mwmiller@cwnet.com> wrote: > I have a van that was converted to the Country homes straight up pop top. > I don't like it and want to put on the entire Westy pop top. > > Nothing much is clear to me anyway so join the crowd. > > Mike > > > > On 1/6/09 12:08 PM, "craig cowan" <phishman068@gmail.com> wrote: > > Do you have a westy and need to replace the fiberglass top? > Or are you converting a tin top to a poptop? > > At least it's not clear to me. > > -Craig > '85GL turned WESTY > > On Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 1:22 PM, Mike Miller <mwmiller@cwnet.com> wrote: > > Listees, > > Well the top replacement, Westy for Country homes, is going to proceed. > Someday. > > Of all the methods in the achieves and mentioned which is easier to do that > preserves the entire Westy top, hole, side rail storage, AC cabinet and > all? > > In addition how does one deal with the headliner? > > Mike > > > > |
