Yes, it's a good motor, being both economical and durable. The only issue is that it does not put out enough power to propel a vanagon at interstate speeds; particularly if there is a hill involved.

That's not the motor's fault, it's the fault of the designer who put it in the vanagon. This was later rectified by adding a turbo, but that option was not sold in NA. (though I have seen it done in both imported and homebrewed flavors)
