dear jonce
very interesting and ambitious --
i used to be a carpenter-scaffolder (sidelined due to workplace head injury
9 years ago)
anyway ... as i looked at your awning my first thought was wind load--
would i wake up in the morning with my awning in shreds ??
or simply in a tree in new jersey?
what if i got all set up and then had to move 7 feet -- do i have to tear
down and reset?
people like to BBQ and does this cloth have the ability to withstand a
flash-fire from BBQ overflow of oil or fat?
can one woman or child set up the awning with few tools or little mechanical
ability?
can one man who is simply a "driver" set up?
the idea looks very interesting and you clearly have considerable
mechanical/engineer type knowledge and experience...
this is just one article on windload

i wish i still had my scaffold books which had several nifty charts for
calculating wind load and weight and all the other stuff one has to consider
when building a scaffold.
good lucj
yours

There are two kinds of jobs in the world:
Picking up garbage and telling people things.
Successful people do both, with the same good attitude. (riw)
