Ah, the parallels of life. I'm the youngest in the family (but like you born in 1960). We had two VWs as well, a beetle and a splittie. I was the 4th child, and remember riding in the beetle in the area back of the rear seat (while my 3 siblings were in the rear seat, and my parents up front.) Couldn't do that now-a-days.

I remember recently looking at a beetle and seeing how small that area behind the rear seat is. The world has definitely shrunk as I've gotten older.

The splittie was a vehicle I liked, but in the DC climate I've got to have air conditioning, which is why I've got Vanagon syndrome now. And of course, I was sold on Syncros from before I got my first Vanagon.
