As I've said before, this list has the least amount of off-topic content of any of the car-related lists I've ever been on.

What is the purpose of an email list? Is it just to be a strictly focused question and answer resource? If so there are better technologies, such as any of the wide variety of "knowledge base" software systems.

I think lists like this are more than just knowledge resources, they are a community of sorts and as such we need to allow (within reason) some amount of more "social discussion".
