The method of  tying off the wheel should be a big factor. Using the seat belt, or a piece of rope is "iffy" at best. The best solution to this issue that I have seen in use by a tow operator was a ratcheting, adjustable length bar, with a hook on either end. One end went under the brake pedal, and the other hooked over the steering wheel. It looked like "The Club" on steroids! The steering wheel did not move much with that set-up...

Most? I don't think so... For towing companies, it's a common practice to tie off the steering wheel when towing via the rear wheels. And I'm sure the insurance companies would've come down on them if it was considered unsafe.

Cheers,

Jeff

Most think it unsafe to rely on the steering lock or a lashing to keep the van going strait down the road.

What is wrong with towing it with the rear wheels on the dolly and the steering wheel tied off? I can remember the tow truck driver using the seat belt on my old bus. Ken Lewis
