For it was  the year 1999, approaching the much argued-over not start
of a new Millennium, when the world was gripped by apocalyptic fears
of end times and Armageddon, all because someone would no longer be
able to set their VCR.  Well, not really, but you get the point.

I, being still enshrouded by divorce-induced stupor and memories of my
beloved '67 Squareback ablaze amidst my burning garage, had to decide
on a decent transportation for self, 2 kids plus a Greyound.  The
choice list was rather short due to space, personal, and budget
requirements.  It came down to a Westfalia or an early 80's Mercedes
300D wagon.  300D became my second choice due to the automatic
transmission and, believe it or not, what I thought would be high
maintenance costs.  I joined to the list and read pretty much every
email until I learned enough to make an informed purchase decision.

Fast forward the VCR to 2009, two Westfalias and many relatively
trouble and leak free miles later, the List is facing another
theoretical milestone with passing of the List Admin baton to the
subscribers at large.  Not sure whether this will mean autocracy or
anarchy, but, as they say, only history will  tell.

Long live the list!
