Dennis,
I am sorry for your loss, as we all are.
I am the oldest and also born in 1960. I received the family 1971
Campmobile in 1977 as my first 'car', with a blown engine. Being of sound
engineering mind and slender finances I soon learned to fix everything that
I could. I had that bus until 1999 and 305,000 miles over the 48 states and
almost all the Canadian provinces (I likely rebuilt 95% of that vehicle
several times over, terminal frame cancer made me finally send it to Jim
Sartwell's for parting out). That's when I bought my first Vanagon Westy
(which tragically burned this summer, but my son and I are working on the
replacement, thanks for the great tow hitch). I actually met Kim Brennan in
1980 at the University of Maryland, back when he had a Super Beetle (and
re-met him about three years ago through this list).
The VW community is one of the most helpful and caring that I know of. I
have been the beneficiary of some very kind folks and have done my best to
pass it on, as you have done so well yourself.
Your father would be proud of you, I am sure.
Regards,
Dave O

Ah, the parallels of life. I'm the youngest in the family (but like
you born in 1960). We had two VWs as well, a beetle and a splittie. I
was the 4th child, and remember riding in the beetle in the area back
of the rear seat (while my 3 siblings were in the rear seat, and my
parents up front.) Couldn't do that now-a-days.
I remember recently looking at a beetle and seeing how small that area
behind the rear seat is. The world has definitely shrunk as I've
gotten older.
The splittie was a vehicle I liked, but in the DC climate I've got to
have air conditioning, which is why I've got Vanagon syndrome now. And
of course, I was sold on Syncros from before I got my first Vanagon.
