Mike, I converted to mbox using a perl script. I found one which worked okay to begin with, but had to rewrite some of it because of various problems (including the weird addresses you mention.) When you import the mbox file, you will notice that there are a few messages from "foo@bar", this is a standin address when there was no address in the original listserv file. As weird as the listserv format might be, keep in mind that both formats are have the basic format "header body header body header body" etc (listserv has some dashes in between messages).
