Subject: Warning about worm in archive file
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Harold Teer has informed me that there is a worm attached to one of the messages that is part of the archive file I sent out. The worm was in the signature of a message sent on 6/23/2000. (The worm was part of the original message as it was sent to the list 8 years ago.) For almost everybody, this worm poses no threat. In particular, if you followed the directions about importing the file into opera mail, the worm cannot affect you.

You have reason to be concerned about the worm only if you are using windows, are importing the mbox file into outlook express, and haven't patched your outlook express (or updated versions) in a several years. If you think this might apply to you, you can read about the worm here: http://service1.symantec.com/sarc/sarc.nsf/html/wscript.kakworm.html

Of course, as a general precaution, you should always be using a virus scanner with updated definitions, yada yada yada.

While Harold told me that his scan didn't turn up any other worms, it is still possible that there are some worms among the more than 100,000 messages in the archive file. You minimize your risk by running a virus scanner, and using an up-to-date mail client.

For anyone who is curious, the worm is in a message sent on 6/23/2000 with subject "Lets rip out the Air Conditioner".

-Wes
