Thanks to everyone who replied to my question about dealing with popups.
And my apologies if this cluttered the list past Frydaye.

Sorry, I'm not switching to Linux, and I rather dislike Macs and have no
intention of buying a new computer at the moment anyway.  But I got many
recommendations to use spybot and/or adaware.  Adaware can't be downloaded
in India (where I am at the moment), so I'm trying spybot.

It's still a work in process.

But I appreciate all the help!
