Bob, and as I have mentioned in the past, the 'ribbed/aluminized cardboard tube,' you describe can also be collapsed, robbing your intake of needed air. I had one that would collapse everytime I gave it gas.....every Vanagon owner should inspect theirs! Bob, have a safe trip back to SLC.....and more details on that rubber fuel intake hose please.
