Your problem is either due to a wiring problem in the door or one of the
actuators has failed. Some needs to do some trouble shooting. The fuse
unless it has been moved is in an add on holder on top of the fuse box above
most of the relays. It should be a 10 amp (red) and placed vertical.

Subject: 90 Multivan auto locks problem
Greetings,
I used to be a member of this list several years ago when I first became a
Vanagon owner. My family bought our 1990 Multivan in 2001 and I've turned
to this list many times for insight. About 3 years ago, I just got so busy
that I wasn't keeping up with the mail and unsubscribed.
Well a new problem has come up and I my owner's manual and my own
investigation hasn't helped. Since I just spent a whole lot on a
transmission leak, I'd rather not go back to my mechanic yet. Here's the
problem. My van has auto door locks and when I turn my key in either of the
front door locks, the locks will unlock and then re-lock. If I quickly open
the door when it's unlocked the mechanism will continue to cycling through
this unlock/lock series until I close the door and it can complete the
latch/lock. I can get in by manually opening the sliding door.
I've tried to find the fuse in the handbook and it says that the auto locks
are a fuse that located above the #1-22 main configuration. All I seem to
have above that are big square blocks that 'plug' in. I've tried unplugging
these to see if it stops the door locks and I've had no success. Although,
this started a couple days after I got the van back from the mechanic, I
don't think it's related because it did work fine for a day or two. Also,
it hasn't rained during this time period but has been colder for this area.
(Southern California) I've sprayed WD-40 in and around the locking
mechanism but that didn't help either.
So I have 2 questions: Where's the fuse so that I can disable the auto
mechanism, and where should I start looking for a short? Thanks for all
your help.
