Stephen, The Maxima 5 X 114.3mm alloys can be fitted to the Vanagon only if there is at least a 2mm play in the lughole. The adapter lugbolts/nuts need that much space to compensate for the difference in the patterns. In simple English, the hole has to be about 17mm in size to accommodate the wobble washer on these special hardware. It't an update on the old Cragar Unilugs from the 60's and 70's. If the holes in the wheels require that the lugholes need to be enlarged to fit these special lugnuts, then you might as well redrill them to fit.
