As long as the plastic welding or poor connection is upstream of the air flow meter........ it won't have an affect on the AFM's functioning. Unfiltered air might get in, and dust into the engine ..........but the AFM can work just fine with no air box or filter on the upstream side of it. I do however, 'collect' air boxes. I have a big ole one out of a 88 Jetta TDI. I have some others, Can send you pictures etc.

If you have a 'square vanagon intake on your AFM' ...........couldn't you just use a vanagon air box ? I'm probably not following you correctly. But I have many air boxes........Subaru SVX, tdi jetta, volvo, vanagon, 2.2 subaru possibly. etc. etc. send me a picture ! scott www.turbovans.com and happy day to ya ! ........to all.
