True, some play is normal - under load and yes, the bushings are there to absorb some of the bumps and vibration, also under load.

But the play he shows is the result of turning the input shaft back and forth by hand & it's not the bushings compressing under load. The bushings are worn out!

Yes, some play is normal. That is what the bushings are there for. This absorbs some of the bumps and vibrations so they do not travel to your hands.

I was turning the coupler at rack ~ 1/4 turn.
