old used lifters can take a long time to get permanently quiet again.
The adjustment at the rocker arm screw has to be right of course.
( an engine guy I met recently said 'half turn after contact'.......not 1.5
turns or whatever the book says, fwiw )
treat them with 'hydraulic lifter cleaner' ...an oil additive.
And no kidding, I've had a re-done used waterboxer engine take 6 months of
regular use before noisy hyd lifter syndrome is totally gone.
I have also seen this some.........they'll be quiet............and then one
time when you drive it........they're noisy ....
next time you drive it,........all is quiet again.
But generally, if you're keeping the old lifters in service, and they're
noisy.........
make sure rocker arms and push rods and adjustment is correct........then
it's just treat the oil with an additive, use good oil.......
and eventually they will get quiet again permanently.
one warning...........very short periods of operation, like to move a car 50
feet and then shut it off.
Do that several times...........and it can make the lifters noisy again for
quite a while. On subaru engines in vanagons too.
