If you take one apart and look at the mechanism, you'll see it doesn't really matter. There is a point when any digit is around, where it may be hard to reset. As I recall, that's when a digit is between 4 and 5 (5 and 6?). The reset mechanism presses against a cam lobe on each digit cylinder, and the high point of that cam is around there. The cam seemed to be deliberately offset so it resets properly when full digits are shown.

Mine was hard to reset until I cleaned the old dried up lube out of it and re-lubed it. (I used SuperLube, a thin silicone based grease)
