Such a notice generated by the list administrators might be appropriate
periodically to purge any inactive members and dead e-mail addresses.
But I too would like to know the story.

To control spam, another list to which I subscribe requires that you
confirm being the author of a post by sending you an e-mail to which you
must respond within one hour or your post is deleted.
