Air cooled platform or WBX for traveling to the South Americas?

In those parts, a Bay bus is possibly more common than a Vanagon. So parts may be easier, and/or quicker, to get. FWIW, IIRC, the air cooled engine used in the Vanagon is similar or the same as engines in late model Bays.

Obviously it's not just engine stuff that can fail. But, in this day and age, and all things being equal, my guess is that if you're somewhere in say Brazil, and your WBX Vanagon required parts, it *might* just mean more time for parts to arrive. Finding an air cooled engine part or Bay bus part locally might be quicker.

Also consider what the local mechanics generally know better. A Bay, or a Vanagon?

Just my .02

Neil.
