Subject: My VanaJetta Conversion Passed Emissions!!
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi all.

"Whew!" Passed! And quite well I might add. I had to re-read the results several times to be sure!

And what a great day too. Beautiful sunny Vancouver B.C. day. And the neat part was that both myself and another bronze coloured Westy were the only ones there at Air Care. We took over the dang place! We entered more or less at the same time, but somehow she got out sooner than I. I know, I know. It's not a race! ;)

This isn't anything amazing, though the numbers etc *may* be of use for anyone considering upgrading to a more modern engine. (no disrespect to the stock engines)

Of note that I can recall off the top of my head:

- was a stock well maintained air cooled 2.0 Now a 2.0 Jetta ABA OBD1 - Installed a cat on conversion. Air Care noted presence of cat. Did not obviously note different engine, though they're both "2.0" so.....? <shrugs> - tester *likely* started my Westy in 3rd gear. I saw the tires stop/start a few times and heard the engine totally rattle while lugging..... and I was behind a closed door. Yeesh. And who knows how accurately he hooked up the pipes etc. to my tailpipe. - exhaust home made up to cat/muffler/tailpipe. - air filter box non stock. (smaller) - engine otherwise stock. - engine has ~ 100,000 KM's with quite a few new parts including all new ignition stuff.

Driving Test Results of old air cooled:

HC: 48/182 allowable CO: .44/1.73 NOx: 2055/2139

Driving Test Results of VanaJetta:

HC: 28/182 CO: .15/1.73 NOx: 360/2139

Idle Test of old air cooled:

HC: 121/409 CO: 1.13/4.59

Idle Test of VanaJetta:

HC: 34/409 CO .01/4.59

All this in spite of the above, but still. I'm really proud that it passed. These results are better than I anticipated based upon gut instincts. It was a first time DIY engine conversion, and was a sight "unheard" engine.

What a great Friday!

Colour me tickled,

Neil.
