One thing to keep in mind about a trip through Mexico (and I would assume it would apply to South America as well) is fuel availability. That's why I vote for diesel - - gas availability may be iffy in some of the smaller towns, but you can almost always find diesel! Take your own fuel additive and extra filters, of course.
