Subject: Removing axle question - - the outcome
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

An update on my axle problems from last week - - got it back together this evening, just before the rain started!

So, I installed new wheel bearings and seals (thanks, Bus Depot!) using Castrol Syn-Tec grease (same color as nitrile gloves, be careful not to leave a hunk of glove in there!). Disassembled, cleaned, inspected and re-packed the CV joints using Red-Line Red Moly CV joint grease. While I could have used the regular black moly grease, and good ol' Pennsoil 704 Wheel Bearing grease, this new stuff smells a lot better! Hope it does it's job as well or better.

Got the axle nut torqued down to at least 360 ft. lbs., had to trounce it a bit to get to the cotter pin hole. I'll check it in a week or so.

All in all, it went pretty well, the main thing here was getting a few days of good weather to get it all done in. But the big Kudos go to the people who make up our Vanagon list - - having the Bentley is one thing, but getting all your valuable input really makes the job more fun! Thanks, everyone!

Gary
