UL 1278 specifies safety shutoffs when required, so make sure you buy a UL approved heater.

The Holmes heater mentioned early is claimed to have an "overheat shut-off", - http://www.allergytech.com/holmes_heater_hch4166.htm

Some heaters have tip-over shutoffs, some have overheat shutoffs, and some (like oil/water filled ones) may not need shutoffs (because they don't get hot enough).
