Folks, I posted the message below a few months back and have since spoken with the owner of the tree-damaged aircooled '80 Westy.  It's complete but it appears that the tree fell against the front end, mostly high on the passenger's side; the A-pillar and the leading edge of the passenger's door are bent and the windshield broken.  There may be other damage I could not see from my vantage point.  There's some rocker rust and it appears to have been sitting a while.  Poptop is mossy.   Bobby says it is likely only good for parts and will need to be trucked away, but may have a good AC engine and trans and the camper stuff ( I did not see the interior) may be worth salvaging.    I'd be interested my own self but there's really nothing on the van I could use for mine except maybe the trim rings.  Santa brought me new dog-dish hubcaps so I'm set for those.   Price not mentioned, but if anyone is interested the owner's email is bobby23227@gmail.com.  Good luck.   Stephen

We’ve all heard the stories about the vans that are hiding out there, just waiting to be rescued by a caring Vanagon nut.  A friend told me about two he’s heard of, an aircooled Westy hit by a falling tree and a later camper just sitting there.  My wife came back from looking at a house to be auctioned with the report of a Westy parked around the corner from it.  Wow!   I looked at one of them this morning, one of the “friend” machines.  Looked up the owner’s name/address and drove by on the way to work.  It’s a brown ’83 Westy with ’05 tags.  Obviously been parked for a while, but in surprisingly good condition.  Shiny brown paint, a couple of dents and one teensy spot of seam rust, mossy poptop that needs new seals but good glass, tires and interior.  Only the contact paper wall panels are cracked and peeling.  I’d buy this thing in a heartbeat if I needed or wanted another.  Well, I do but that’s a different story.   Anyway, if anyone is interested I would be glad to follow up on these finds.  The aircooled is likely only good for parts and no telling if the others are available.  Let me know.  It’ll keep me from buying another one for myself.   Stephen
