i do not possess  electrical genius ...
that is for sure ...
but i do possess a fried inverter --
there is a peak load demand that can exceed the average or even regular draw
---
like the toner fixer
or the initial microwave turning on on a small microwave rated as usable
with my 1000 w inverter

any way what ever it is you try to do ...
practice once at home in the open with a person right on the alligator clip
who can remove power once failure is imminent
you will know this by the smoke curling up from the inverter .. .

as with all electrical devices the weakest point will fry first --
but the wires to battery will keep drawing current and exacerbating the
short -- making fire if the power is not removed...
grabbing the wires could burn your hands -- hence the alligator clip --

another interesting item on the agenda is how long is that printer going to
run in your van --
lots of computer equipment is run by 12 volt or less DC ...
 but because it is designed for house hold there is a transformer to dumb
down the power

My bet is you could save your self a lot of weirdness simply by purchasing a
printer designed to run with automotive power
