That sensor isn't for you, it's to make sure that the heater has enough oxygen to burn clean and keep its CO output in spec.

So the critical statistic to be looking for would be deaths from propane heaters with low-oxygen shutoffs.

Just as a reminder, the total US yearly deaths from "non-intentional, non-fire" CO is in the range of 200, about half from heating appliances of all sorts.
