Subject:      4 spd transmission noise, low oil level

The 4 speed transmission in my '85 Westy started making noise when
underway.  I looked under and found that it had been leaking from the
flange seals.  I found that the transmission was exactly one quart low.

Is being one quart low enough to do poor lubrication damage or is it
more because the tranny now has over 220,000 miles on it?

I have another transmission that I'll be putting into it when I get back
to Maine.
