I always had it in my head that there had been a 1.7 T3 but assumed it was the 1.7 T2 lodged in my memory. I was thinking about it and although I don't have the brochure, I'm pretty sure the petrol 1.8 I4 was introduced in South Africa in alongside the 2.1 WBX in 1990 as an less expensive alternative to the 2.1; the 2.6(?) I5 came along in 1992 with the discontinuation of the 2.1. Legend always had it that VWSA had built prototype I5 T3's long before 1990 (the I5 being common to the also locally-produced Audi 100) but could never get the go-ahead from Wolfsburg. |
